Tenute Luce della Vite 25th Anniversary 2017

A special bottle was created to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Luce. It sports an inscription by Vittorio Frescobaldi, one of the label’s founders, that reads, “Here lies the memory of the vineyard and work, of the earth, the sun, the sound of time and the song of the seasons.” It is a huge wine in 2017, still sitting very much within itself. The nose is a savoury, earthy, tobacco affair with ripe red berries poking through a warm, spicy, angular palate full of cassis, olives, and bitter walnut undertones. It is going to require some time in the bottle to settle down and hopefully emerge from the unusual tannin and ruggedly youthful nature. Time will tell. A Super Tuscan blend almost evenly split between merlot and sangiovese, with high potential.

Winemaker Notes

Luce was the first wine from Montalcino made by blending Sangiovese and Merlot grapes.

It was thanks to the collaboration of the Marchesi de’ Frescobaldi and Robert Mondavi Families that came the idea of matching the roundness and softness of Merlot, whose vineyards were planted in these plots since the 1970s, with the elegance and structure of Sangiovese.

Since 2005, Lamberto Frescobaldi has been completely responsible for this project. He continues to write the history of Luce, a Super Tuscan wine appreciated all around the world, directing the production with great passion, from the vineyard to the making of each year’s blends.

In 2017, a crisp spring was followed by a warm,  sunny and dry summer with bright cloudless skies.  The  clayey  soils  of  the  Merlot  vineyards  provided  the  plants  with  adequate  water  reserves,  which  helped  reduce  any  heat-related  stresses.  Rain  showers  in  mid-September  supported a perfect ripening of the grapes. The  wine  displays  an  intense,  almost  impenetrable,  ruby  red  color.  On  the  nose,  the  wine  introduces  itself  with  intense  red  fruits  and  subtle  hints  of  incense  and  spicy  notes  that  bequeath  extraordinary  complexity.  In  the  mouth,  the  bouquet’s  complexity  comes  alive  through elegant tannins that give the wine a unique balance and structure. Sangiovese, Merlot

97  James Suckling

Dark-berry, walnut, cedar and violet aromas with just a hint of chocolate. Full-bodied, layered and rich with ripe tannins and a vivid finish. Shows energy and a velvety texture. Deep and long. Give it two or three years to soften. Try after 2022.
