We are thrilled to have secured this parcel of Mourvèdre on the rocky slopes of Moon Mountain AVA in the Mayacamas range. This varietal is now exceedingly rare in the North Coast, despite being widely planted by immigrants in the late 19th century. Yet, it can do wonders. The soils here are decomposing fractured volcanic rock, and the vines can break right through to develop complex root systems, leading to deeper wines. We fermented this with 50% whole clusters for spice and a touch of savage character, so singular to this varietal. Aromatics of ripe raspberry, cranberry, white peppercorn, dried rosemary and fig waft from the glass. On the palate, the wine is powerful but fresh, with loads of spice and deep red fruit flavors. The finish is long and graceful, with fine tannins adding focus. 68 cases produced from one 500 liter puncheon and one barrel.
